Back in the day, the only way you could reach a truck driver was through CB Radio which was primarily a way for drivers to communicate with each other while on the road. Drivers may still utilize CB Radio, but we also know majority of them own and use smartphones – 95% do according to a survey conducted by KJ Media.

Drivers are no stranger to technology and our industry hasn’t given them enough credit for being tech savvy. According to a separate driver survey conducted by Dickinson Fleet Services, 75% of respondents said truckers check social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram daily.

Technology and usage of laptops, smartphones and tablets play a big role in today’s society and is making leaps and bounds within the trucking industry. According to Vice President of enterprise and mobility and connected devices at VDC Research, David Krebs, “Some of the largest mobile and wireless deployments we’ve seen to date have been instituted by the logistics and transportation segment.”

While the transportation industry is one of the last to embrace technology, many brokerages and their customers are adopting online platforms and mobile apps. Eyefortransport conducted a study in which they asked logistics providers how they perceive tech-driven logistics companies. Half of respondents answered they are the future of the industry with 32% saying they will replace traditional companies. As U.S. Army General, Eric Shinseki, said, “If you dislike change, you’re going to dislike irrelevance even more.”

So, why are logistics professionals ramping up new technology solutions? They are looking to:

  • Improve communication
  • Keep customers more informed
  • Pay carriers and drivers faster
  • Mitigate risk and minimize cargo theft/damage
  • Keep drivers safe
  • Manage all shipments in one, easy place
  • Grow their network of trusted carriers and more

Do you utilize an online tool or mobile app to help make hauling and managing cargo more efficient? It may be overwhelming to select a tool with all the new players in today’s transportation technology game. Find one that is easy to use and can be downloaded to get you up and running quickly.
